Flagstaff 'City
of Seven Wonders'
By A.M. Melfa & Carl Jackson
FLAGSTAFF, AZ
- Just a 30 mile drive north of Sedona sits Flagstaff at the
heart of Northern Arizona.
The city sits squarely at
the intersection of Route 40
(and the historic Rte 66) going west to east, and I-17
running north to south (also 89A from Sedona), making it
the centerpiece for commerce for the area.

Verde Canyon Railroad
By Carl Jackson
Clarkdale, AZ - If you've been to Sedona more than once and are looking for
something different and fun to do, or if you love trains, we
recommend the Verde Canyon Railroad in the town of Clarkdale, AZ.
Clarkdale sits at the base of the old copper mining town of Jerome, and it's just 25 miles outside of the Sedona city limits.
The Verde Canyon Railroad is privately owned and runs along the Verde River through the
stunning Verde Canyon in the Verde Valley. Because it's just a
four hour round trip (40 miles), you'll also have time to do some
shopping in nearby Jerome, AZ.

The Grand
CanyonGrand Canyon,
AZ - Just 113 miles northwest of Sedona, via Flagstaff, is one of the most
spectacular natural wonders in the world; the Grand Canyon.
More than 1
million vehicles stop along its South Rim each year.
Said President Theodore Roosevelt in 1908:
"In
the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a natural wonder which is in kind
absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world...Leave it
as it is. You cannot improve on it. The ages have been at work on
it, and man can only mar it."

Rendezvous with the Meteor Crater
By Carl Jackson
FLAGSTAFF, AZ - Driving across country from Chicago to Sedona for the
first time it was hard not to be intrigued by a sign I
spotted on Interstate 40 just west of Winslow: “Meteor
Crater—20 Miles.”
I was only vaguely familiar with the
Meteor Crater. In fact my primary knowledge of the
impact site came from the 1984 movie “Starman” with Jeff
Bridges. The Starman and Jenny Hayden (played by Karen
Allen) spend several days traveling from
Wisconsin—pursued by the U.S. Army--to the crater site
for a rendezvous with his mother ship.

Images of America: Sedona takes us back
SEDONA, AZ -- If you come to Sedona,
you will invariably hear long time locals reminisce about when there was
only one stop light on Hwy 89A, or when the "Y" in Uptown was just a
stop sign.
But if you were to go back just a century or so, you'd find an even
simpler, but perhaps harder, time when there wasn't even a Hwy 89A,
or an Uptown, or a Village of Oak Creek.
